You think its going to be a quiet day and then…..
A third plane is said to have caused a blast at the Pentagon.
This is all a bit much to take in.

  1. also, i am frightened as a female US citizen with brown skin(from India)…and brothers and male friends with brown skin…i am frightened that there will be folks targeted for hate and anger…i realize that i should trust my neighbors of this US nation to not react negatively but..i am afraid that all folks with brown skin resembling an islamic individual or all folks who are islamic individuals will be targeted for suspicion and anger.

  2. That’s what I fear too Mamantha. But I hope people have enough sense not to react in that way.
Metafilter has a good thread on it with people’s reaction but it’s not working for me right now.
My thoughts are with all those who this affects.

  3. my god…what a tragedy…my parents visited the twin towers exactly a year back, which is soo scary, and too see it fall live on TV, scared the shit out of me..

  4. Faisal, you work in Canary Wharf? Were you guys evacuated as well?
My condolances to all those affected. Saima, my cousin is OK, apparently he doesn’t work in Manhattan. Thanx for your kind thoughts anyway…

  5. To see images that you would associate with movies, live on TV made me feel sick to my stomach. I sat and watched most of it ive, terror after terror, people dying before my eyes. All that I could do was pray, but I still watch the images, and can’t quite understand that they are real. This was real, and the world will NEVER be the same again. Something and someone has changed the world forever. My prayers are with everyone involved in this. DT

  6. I got to say that this is a sickening tragedy – scenes of Palestinian people rejoicing was crazy. May the people who are responsible for this be swiftly brought to justice. I think all Muslims/Asians should be careful in Western European countries and America. Anyone seen in a headscarf or at a mosque may get some sort of abuse. It’s a shame that we get tarred with the same brush for something that a few crazy people get up to.

  7. Yeah. Canary Wharf was pretty much evacuated. CSFB decided that there was no risk for CSFB Europe, so after my external training, I popped back to see what was going on, and to do some work. It was deserted.
I was quite concerned about my cousin, who worked in one of the towers, but foruntately it turned out that he had gone to visit his boss in another building, and so was evacuated safetly. Some of my friends who have just started work at Morgan Stanley are over in NY right now training, and were quite possibly based in one of the towers. No word. Scary.

  8. I hope that your friends are safe too. Its just a case of waiting to see what happens in the days and weeks to come. I don’t think we’ll ever be the same again because of the images that we have seen.

  9. Actually most of the people i have spoken to don’t seem to realise the size of what has happened. The Spanish guys in my Hall of residence were actually laughing…. Its seems that the media has numbed us all. Very few people seem to be affected.

  10. The world is in disbelief more than anything. You’re right Tahira, it’s like a movie. Independence Day springs to mind. This sort of thing doesn’t happen in real life yet it’s all over the news, the live pictures, I still can’t believe it.
I’m glad whoever had friends and relatives there knows they’re OK. I think the emotional damage will be the one hardest to repair.

  11. someone on the radio proclaimed that he wanted to bomb the local islamic mosque…i have an image of a mosque (a beautiful one) in my cubicle, i have it covered today…i am hindu but…i have alot of anxiety…the presidents usage of a christian psalm promotes the sentiment that this is a christian vs. other religion problem…not a terrorist vs. america problem…my boyfriend is lovely and sweet and intelligent, but white and with faith in the people around him…while i don’t have that faith, at least not at this moment. how do i get my faith back, my faith that people in general are good and don’t judge based on color, religion and clothing.

  12. After reading the thread over at Metafilter I think most people are not turning this into a religion thing. But then again it may be that the people who are harbouring such thoughts may not be making them public on the internet for fear of being ridiculed.
I think right now people are really angry and anger seems to cloud their judgement. Give it some time and things will become clear. I hope they’ll see that this isn’t a Muslim vs. America thing. The sort of hatred shown by this terrible act has nothing to do with Islam. It’s quite the opposite.
Every Muslim I’ve spoken to does nothing but condemn yesterday’s attacks.

  13. I don’t think that Mamantha need worry too much. Attacks are likely to be on Mosques and people easily identifiable as Muslims. With any luck, the feelings that are running so high among the majority of Americans will calm down soon, the intelligence service will find the perpetrators quickly, and justice (in their eyes) will be handed out.

  14. Being a Muslim originally from Sri Lanka, I know how it is to be persecuted (Muslims form 9% of the population of Sri Lanka, and get picked on by Tamils and Sinhalese regularly).
