Maybe it’s easier to forgive our enemies because we don’t expect them to live up to the same expectations that we expect our friends to live up to. You can excuse an enemy by saying they didn’t know any better. Your friend should have known better. Or at least that’s my take on it.
Perhaps that was so in the 1820s… but we’ve moved on. Forgiveness is not granted to anyone these days.
