Columbia Road Series: Open House

This was my first trip to Columbia Road flower market in London and it turned out to be quite a treat. So many different plants and flowers; tropical flowers and orange trees. The wonderful weather just added to the whole experience.

There are also a lot of vintage and gift boutiques around, including Open House. They have two rooms with gift items, vintage furniture and homewares. They also have a garden featuring plants and other gift items. The owners very kindly let me take some photos. I will definitely be going back to Columbia Road the next time I have a free weekend.

Winter Vegetable Soup

Today is definitely soup weather so I came home today armed with some in-season veggies with the aim of making my first ever soup. I read a few recipes to get an idea of how to tackle this but it’s all very straight forward and by my reckoning you can substitute with many other vegetables. Looks good doesn’t it? Tasted good too.

Winter Vegetable SoupHere’s the recipe; give it a go. Was tres simple. Serves 4.

It snowed!

London is at a stand still and I’m not allowed to log in from home into the work network due to server overload. Woe is me(!)

Last Year of my Twenties

29!! Geez, where have my twenties gone?!

Anyway, besides that I think this blog going to go in a different direction going forward. More designy…make sure you stick around!

By the way, I so could have been in this ad (which is being shown EVERYWHERE):

I saw these cool, young hipsters standing around in groups and thought something weird was up. Then I saw the signs saying a commercial was being filmed. Phew, lucky escape.

Failed Podcast Launch 2007

So in a moment of madness back in 2007 I decided to record a podcasting session called The Saima Says Show with one of the younger sisters. It came out crap so we canned it and moved on with our lives.

I recently just listened to it again and the first part is cringeworthy and sounds horribly rehearsed…even though it wasn’t! And I don’t know why I sound so blooming depressed.

Anyway, thought I’d share a snippet with you all and then run and hide behind a rock from the humiliation. Enjoy but don’t blame me for the ten minutes of your life you’ll never get back. If you’re unlucky, I’ll post the rest at a later date.

(I took out the music for all our sakes.)

Hajj 1429

I’ve sent emails out to most folks by now to let them know that I’m off to perform Hajj next week with my family.

So Hajj eh? What’s it all about? I’ll let Wiki take this one.

I’m kind of nervous really, mainly for my parents who are coming with me. How will they cope with the hordes of people, the heat and the camping elements? I guess that’s what we’re there for, to make sure they’re looked after. I’m told by a lot of people that the main test of the pilgrimage is keeping patient during all the madness. On the other hand, my dad seems to be more worried about having his head shaved!

I’ll try to keep you updated while I’m out there but I’m thinking of only taking a crappy phone so maybe not. Either way, I’m hoping there’ll be much to tell you upon my return.

It’s customary when leaving for Hajj to ask those you know to forgive you for any wrongdoings so here’s me asking for just that. If I’ve ever upset you with something I’ve said or done in the past then my sincere apologies.

People say Hajj is life changing but what I want from it is an opportunity for reflection, something that I don’t get in the hustle and bustle of every day life. A chance to look at myself and work towards becoming a better person.

Peace :)

Eight Years Old

I got a Berocca Blogger Relief Kit in the post yesterday and it reminded me, oh yeah, I have a blog! Then I remembered I missed its eighth birthday and I nearly cried. Nearly.

That’s just how ENTJs roll

The Jung Typology Test has been rocking the hizzouse lately. We’ve taken the test (more than once), matched it to the Keirsey Temperaments table, pretty much analysed it to death and laughed/cried at the results. And then we’ve made our family take the test too and laughed some more.

My sister and I came out as Field Marshals which everyone has interpreted as Hard Nosed Bitches but hey man, we get results!

What are you?
